Klara and the Sun
Klara and the Sun

My interpretation rely on the position and the Sun and the overcrowding straw. The straw metaphorizes the tension in the story and Josie’s condition as the straw grows nonstop. In terms of the Sun, on one hand, it shows that hope may diminish when sun sets every evening, the inevitable threats, challenges, and losses we might face. On the other hand, the Sun rises every morning, clarifying the idea that if we keep viewing things optimistically, we may eventually harvest the fruits of our perseverance. This presents hoping is a indispensable approach to obtaining growth and resiliense.

My artwork depicts the duality of hope and struggle through the symbolism of the dusk and the overcrowding straw. It reflects the law of attraction, suggesting that even facing overwhelming challenges, maintaining an optimistic perspective can lead to resilience and mentally growth. This drive home the importance of faith in our life, reminding us that while plights may seem to be impassible, the promise of a new dawn offers the potential for renewal and fruits.

This situation appears to be the coin with two sides: Klara “knows the Sun will always wish people well” (p. 271), which is the rationale why she prays to it as if it were her god. Nonetheless, readers may harbors the idea that her prayers as ultimately worthless. futile. In stark contrast to Klara’s “eerie praying,” her actions highlight her kindness, adding a rich spiritual depth to the narrative. The value of the Sun is immense and irreplaceable for Klara; she remembers witness of the Sun providing nourishment to the Beggar Man and his dog (p. 270) when she was still in the AF shop. This lived experience inspires her to pray to the Sun by virtue of exchange.

As you can see, the image illustrates the poignant scene in which Klara is praying to the Sun, hoping to summon special nourishment for Josie, who is suffering from the side effects of being lifted. This moment occurs in Mr. McBain’s barn, a place where Klara believes the Sun takes rest after dusk. At this juncture, Klara experiences complicated emotions, inclusive of helplessness, regret, and a profound kindness. In her quest for this special nourishment, she sacrifices a integral liquid from her body, an essential component for Artificial Friends (AFs). Since making this sacrifice, she often feels unbalanced. In a nutshell, despite her naivety, Klara incarnates a deep sense of kindness and reverence for the Sun, which resonates with the title of the book, Klara and the Sun.
